King Grimbalki, second king of Ekrund and denied entry to Ankor Drakk by his brother Garudak, all but cemented his position of ruler of the Dragonbacks by discovering the First Delve. Already Ankor Drakk was in decline, begging for forgiveness and permission to rejoin the king's realm, and the discovery of the First Delve would allow Ekrund to to survive when its coal contract with Karak Eight Peaks would end.
However, Ankor Drakk had one last card to play. While the king controlled the richest veins under the mountains, Ankor Drakk still controlled the only reliable gate leading out of the mountains. This allowed to lift a heavy toll on any caravan from Mount Bloodhorn.
King Grimbalki knew that the only way to ensure Ekrund's surivival was to find his own way out of the mountains, and Bar Bolg was his answer. Spending the last of Mount Ekrund's treasury on improving this gate, the king's gamble paid off as caravans could finally bypass Ankor Drakk on their journey to the old holds. The resultant increase in income was the final nail in the coffin of Ankor Drakk's rebellion.
The gate remained an important part of Ekrund's trade routes, until it was finally overrun by greenskins during the last siege.
