Second contest; painting!

Alright, I'm entering terrain instead of a conventional model, so all the little miniatures dancing on top (and the fancy background) are not part of the entry. Those details exist only to pretty it up. Originally meant this to be a fortress but it has since turned into a long wall. Here's the WIP shot with SpineyNorman's entry to date it:

"The Vale of Ekrund stretches out from the gates of Barak Urbar. Many thousands of years ago, when the hold prospered, bands of manlings began to migrate up from the south. They were no more than simple herders carrying stone tools but the dwarves prized the meat from their cattle. The manlings began also to farm around the outskirts of the mountains but they suffered sorely from the raids of Badlands Greenskins. In exchange for a tribute of grain, the dwarves built a sturdy curtain wall a league across between the cliffs of the valley. This fortification enclosed many acres of farmland and the men prospered. Surviving records do not record what befell them but only the howling of wolves now fills the vale."

Picture: DulargIronnose directs enslaved goblins in rebuilding the battered wall.

Ok Durlag, you inspired me to try my first attempt at doing something halfway close to what you have done. Behold! Amateur hour at its finest!

Hagri Snorrison, exploring Ankor Drakk and documenting the discoveries made possible by the sacrifice of our brave dwarven warriors.

Nice! What tool did you use? Have you tried the Gimp? It's free for download and allows a number of nifty tricks, like scissor select or area select. Takes a couple hours to learn but can be fun if you do this sort of thing every now and again.

Thank you, you are far too kind.

I used Paint. Cut out my model, put him on, and used cut/paste from parts of the picture to try and fill in all the white spots. May need to try out your tool, because using basic Paint was pretty hard.

So, if you try Gimp, photograph your dwarf against a blank background and then use the area select tool (select contiguous area of color) to highlight and erase the background. After that you can just copy and paste Snorrison onto the other picture.

This button:

Paint is awful. Still use it sometimes for details. Haven't found how to draw a rectangle in Gimp.

Gimp looks pretty interesting! My photoshop skills have always been pretty terrible.

Some impressive work from everybody! Good to see people getting involved with the contest.

Like the dwarves and the griffon. What size base does it come on?

I've no idea what size (or shape) it comes on now, but when I bought mine it came with a standard chariot base (50mm X 100mm I think)

Allright, I did actually paint something new during the competition period, an egg shaped goblin. However, I don't have a before pic since I didn't see the competition until I had already painted it. But since it's an easer egg maybe you can take my word for it when I say I painted it on Easter Sunday (the 16th)?

I am working on another model but I don't know if I can get it done in time, I may need those extra hours DS...
