Well guys, it's time. We've had many a wonderful turn, but just like every story must end, turn nine was the last turn for the Dragonback tale. I hope you've all enjoyed yourselves (I know I have)!
The final turn update will take some more time to write than usual, I'm afraid- for one, it is huge! Also I've had (and will have) extremely little time today, so while I'm hard at work finishing this story, I don't think I'll be able to conclude it before tomorrow. So, please be patient, and put down the torches and hayforks .
While the fluff will have to wait for a bit, we can certainly look at the mechanical result of the game!
3rd place; Waaagh! Dularg
The orcs and goblins fought a good game, but sadly, in the end they did not win enough territory to secure a victory. Having their forces spread thin certainly did not help things. Nonetheless they played the game aggressively, as any greenskin should! Fighting with fluff in mind rather than mechanics, and sometimes opting to hamstring themselves whenever it made sense for their faction to do so, the Waaagh! played this game incredibly in character, for which we can only applaud them.
2nd place; Dragonback Expansion Effort
The DEE, rather than go for a mechanical victory, decided to go for a fluff ending they could be happy with- a settlement in the southwest, access to the wealth of the First Delve, and a truce with the dwarves. This they managed to achieve- at the cost of conquering territories. But who cares? Like the orcs, the Marienburgers have acted as their characters would, which makes for a much more entertaining story.
1st place; Dalazidrungak Drekaz
Congratulations to the dwarves! At the end of the campaign they owned the most territories, and more importantly, three of the four most important areas- Khaz Vithang, Ankor Drakk, and mount Bloodhorn itself. The greenskins managed to snatch away a gate from them in the final turn, but in the end the Drekaz came out on top, thanks to their policy of slow but steady expansion into the mountain, dozens of defensive projects, and excellent turn-by-turn analyses. Kudos to the dwarves for winning the first WarTales campaign, and long live king Ironhelm, long may he reign!
Keep in mind that while the mechanical victory is fun for determining who gets bragging rights, what really matters is the story we write together, and that is where true victory can be claimed. I'm truly impressed with the amount of fluff submitted by players almost every turn, and the final turn was no exception (honestly, I feel my own writing is getting a bit redundant at this point ).
I promise I'll have the final turn fluff up asap- hopefully you'll give me a day or two to write things up!
As for the future, well, there is definitely going to be a WT2 campaign. I'll need to work out the details, but I do have some ideas playing around in my head. Whatever I come up with though, Wartales will be back, I promise!
Between then and now, well, I am working on something else, something much smaller in scale, a WarTales 1.5 if you will. Don't know when it'll be ready, but it might be a lot sooner than you'd expect! Look for the final turn fluff for a hint of things to come...
And, finally, I'm not the only one running these campaigns- and while I don't want to ruin any surprises or make promises on anyone's behalf, you may want to look out for what a certain greenskin pirate has in store for you all...
